Video of IGEL Universal Management Suite Demonstrates Desktop Virtualization Control and Cost Savings

Fort Lauderdale, FL August 18, 2009 -- IGEL Technology, the world's third largest thin client vendor (2008 by revenue, IDC), today announced it's won the "Best Management" category in the Citrix Ready XenDesktop Challenge. Featured on CitrixTV (http://www.citrix.com/tv/), the challenge compared videos from thin client partners demonstrating various features of their solutions in conjunction with Citrix XenDesktop. Winners were determined by Citrix executives, along with the number of video views and ratings by the online community.

A Citrix Systems partner for more than 10 years, IGEL offers Citrix XenDesktop users an extraordinary user experience, including fast roll outs, easy remote management, bullet-proof security and the ability to deliver applications to any location. In the video, IGEL Sales Manager Andrew Chambers demonstrates how easy it is to use the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) to access a XenDesktop virtual desktop in less than 60 seconds. The intuitive UMS is a powerful software solution that allows administrators to remotely manage thin clients throughout their entire lifecycle, from automatically setting up profiles, to changing device settings, to re-imaging devices mid-life when new firmware becomes available.

"Our close business and development relationship with Citrix has resulted in a number of original solutions, including our XenDesktop Appliance Mode, which transforms an IGEL Universal Desktop into a Citrix XenDesktop appliance with the click of a mouse," said Erhard Behnke, US president at IGEL Technology Ltd. "We're honored to be recognized for our Universal Management Suite, yet another example of how we're making it easier and more affordable for companies to adopt, deploy and manage virtual desktops."

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – June 23, 2009 – IGEL Technology today launched its new Linux Universal Desktop firmware adding important new power management, multimedia and virtualization functionality to its Linux-based thin client range.  New power management functionality allows Linux users to switch their IGEL thin clients into standby mode and back on in seconds, eliminating long boot times. Traditionally thin clients use 51% less power than traditional PCs and this functionality will help save customers even more on power costs and time. The new functionality also brings IGEL’s Linux-based IGEL one, UD2 and UD3 thin clients in line with upcoming Energy Star certification for thin clients.

In addition to the power management functionality, IGEL has also included in its firmware integration of the VMware View 3.1 client, which can deliver IGEL Linux users a full virtualized desktop experience. The new VMware client adds support for multimedia acceleration and USB redirection and IGEL is one of the first thin client vendors to integrate the new client into its firmware and to receive VMware certification.

IGEL has also added support for multimedia acceleration and USB redirection to its Citrix ICA 11 client, ensuring IGEL Linux thin client customers using Citrix XenApp or Citrix XenDesktop can enjoy the full multimedia benefits of Citrix HDX technology.

Finally, the new Advanced Package of the Linux Universal Desktop firmware now includes a codec package, which enables playback of the most common video and audio formats, and is also required for the multimedia acceleration feature.

The latest Linux Universal Desktop firmware is available for download free of charge for existing customers at: www.igel.com

What new?:

  • New standby power management  functionality eliminates long boot times
  • New firmware also adds important Linux multimedia and virtualization upgrades

IGEL Introduces the World’s First VMware VDM Appliance PDF

Solution converts an IGEL Universal desktop, with just the click of a mouse, into a locked down appliance for accessing a virtual PC delivered by VMware VDM. Can be deployed in seconds by simply unpacking the box and attaching the IGEL Universal Desktop to the network.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – September 15th, 2008 – IGEL Technology, the world’s third largest thin client vendor, will demonstrate this week at VMworld, Las Vegas, its new VMware VDM Appliance Mode for IGEL Universal Desktops, providing a simplified user experience for customers deploying virtual PCs with VMware’s Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM).  This new solution allows IGEL Universal Desktops to be switched, with just a mouse click, from a traditional IGEL thin client to a tightly defined virtual PC access appliance.  This provides end users with a very PC-like experience, with the desktop always maximized on the user’s screen and the inability to access or “kill” local applications and services on the thin client using Ctr-Alt-Del. The VDM Appliance Mode can be made part of the automatic setup of an IGEL Universal Desktop when it is first attached to a network, making the roll out of VMware hosted virtual PCs as simple as plugging an IGEL device into the network and then logging into Windows.

If organisations need access to more functionality in the IGEL Universal Desktop, the VDM Appliance Mode can be reversed with a single mouse click, giving access to world’s largest range of Digital Services, such as web, multimedia, VoIP, SAP and Java, contained in the terminal. This approach is recommended for knowledge workers using more demanding applications, such as Multimedia or VoIP, that are beyond the capability of the RDP protocol used by the VDM Appliance Mode.

According to a July 2008 report by The 451 Group titled, “Virtualization: Reinventing Desktop Computing,” in twelve months' time, one-third of general-purpose desktop users and mobile workers may be provided with virtual desktops.  While desktop virtualization offers many benefits, including increased security, manageability and scalability, there is a lot of concern regarding the impact to all of these end users’ experience.   By introducing the VDM Appliance Mode, IGEL is addressing this concern and making virtual PC access as simple as possible for end users and IT Managers.

“IGEL is helping VMware customers by making deployment of their virtual PCs no more complicated that plugging in a network cable.” said Stephen Yeo, worldwide strategic marketing director for IGEL Technology. “In addition, IGEL’s VDM Appliance Mode makes the end user experience identical to that of a PC, hence improving user acceptance and removing the need for training.”

The switch to VDM Appliance Mode can be easily implemented using the IGEL Remote Management Suite (RMS) software, which comes free with every IGEL thin client.  A systems administrator can simply build the VDM Appliance Mode into a user profile, and remotely assign the profile upon the thin client’s first connection. RMS greatly improves administrators’ productivity, by allowing them to easily control all aspects of application delivery and the user experience without ever having to visit the desktop during roll out and production.

IGEL’s VDM Appliance Mode will be available on its Linux powered Universal Desktops from mid October.

IGEL offers one of the largest ranges of virtual PC access devices on the market, ranging from traditional desktops and PC upgrade cards to LCD integrated units and quad screen units. The company’s full range of thin clients will be on display at the upcoming VMworld 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada from September 15-18, 2008.
